History and Activity

M.P. Semenenko Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine (Institute of geochemistry and physics of minerals (IGFM) before 1993, Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine before 2006), was founded on January 9, 1969 on the base of the Sector of geochemistry, mineralogy, petrography and minerals and the Sector of metallogeny of the Institute of geological sciences of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine with the purposes of study of lithosphere composition and evolutions; investigation of mechanisms of formation and localization of mineral deposits; discovery of geochemical, mineralogical and petrological criteria for prediction and exploration of mineral deposits and ore occurences; the synthesis of minerals and discovery of new types of mineral resources.

Due to significant development of ore-metallogenic direction the Institute of geochemistry and physics of minerals was renamed to Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine accordingly to Decision of Presidium of the Academy of sciences of Ukraine taken on February 18, 1993.

Academician of the Academy of sciences of Ukraine M.P. Semenenko was the founder and the first director of the Institute. He was outstanding scientist in Precambrian petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and metallogeny.

Taking into account great services of academician M.P. Semenenko before country and his significant contribution to development of geological science Presidium of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine have decided to appropriate his name to the Institute on December 7, 2006.

The Institute is a leading establishment in such directions of geological science as geochronology and stratigraphy of the Precambrian, regional and genetic mineralogy, physics of minerals, geology and geochemistry of ore deposits, petrology, exploration and ecological geochemistry. The Institute has a proper equipment and experience for resolving of actual problems of the domestic geological science, i. e. development of mineralogical, petrographical and geochemical criteria for prediction and exploration of deposits of ferrous, noble and rare metals, radioactive elements, non-metal minerals; embedding of geochemical methods of exploration in practice of geological works; prediction of ecological firmness of landscapes to the technogenic loading and discovery of areas of ecological risk from geochemical data; research in industry of spectroscopy of mineral matter, radiation stability of minerals, thermobarogeochemistry, nano- and biomineralogy.

Institute conducts investigations in such scientific directions:

– geochemistry of processes of ore- and rock formation, exploration geochemistry and geochemistry of environment;
– regional and genetic mineralogy, physics of minerals, nanomineralogy;
– petrology of endogenous processes;
– geology, metallogeny and prediction of mineral deposits of Ukraine.

During 1997-2008 the Institute was headed by Academician of the Academy of sciences of Ukraine  M.P.Shcherbak,  prominent scientist in the field of petrology, mineralogy and isotopic geochronology of Precambrian formations.

From 2008 corresponding member of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine O.M. Ponomarenko is the director of the Institute.
